English Only Policy to be implemented this September
The Local Student Council (LSC) of the College of Education (COEd), with the approval of Dean Luzviminda Tantoco, reinstated the English-Only Policy which will be implemented in Roxas Hall this Sepetember. The said policy was last practiced on October 2003 as Speak English Campaign headed by Dean tantoco herself. Joseph Pagtalunan, LSC-COEd governor, said that this policy should have took effect last July 27, but to make way for “Linggo ng Wika” it was moved to September. E-Circle, the society of English majoring students, will monitor and take control over the implementation of the said policy together with the LSC. Pagtalunan said that COEd students are expected to speak in English within Roxas Hall to enhance their proficiency with the language, otherwise they will be rebuked. “Ignorance of the law is not an excuse kaya mag-popost kami ng ordinance sa mga sususunod na araw sa bawat sulok ng Roxas Hall,” Pagtalunan stressed. According to the governor, this policy also aims to lessen the unnecessary noise in Roxas Hall which, if effectively employed in the college, might be implemented in the whole university as well. In addition, LSC also prepared other projects like cleanliness campaign, Bantay Kamag-aral and some classroom improvements to be implemented in Roxas Hall. (Ruth Gladyz B. I find it very odd, scrap that, funny that Joseph Pagtalunan, the exact person pushing to “enhance” English “proficiency” among COEd students can’t finish one simple sentence in English. Taglish only policy, anybody? That’s just stupid.
Does the LSC even check if all classes supposed to be taught in English (English, Math, Science) are compliant?
Is there any way of measuring the “enhancements” after a certain period of time? And, will the Faculty be covered by the same initiative?
As educators they should have thought of this project thoroughly. They should know that there must be certain stimuli that motivates people, conditioning I think it’s called. What’s there to stop COEd students from using their first language? What motivation do they have to speak English? The fear of being “rebuked”? I don’t think so. This is just moronic.
I don’t know if The Mentors people get Pagtalunan’s exact statement, but you’ll notice that he didn’t even bother to finish his sentence in straight English, and yes, he’s promoting the English only policy.
And oh, did Bullet asked if Faculty members are covered by this initiative?
Isn’t that supposed to start with them?
And E* Circle and LSC have the power to *monitor and take control?*
