CHEd and DOH against Further Suspension of Classes

“There will be no more rescheduling of classes in colleges and universities due to A(H1N1),” the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) announced last June 13. Two days later, Hilera Elementary School in Jaen, Nueva Ecija pursued the suspension of classes due to a community outbreak in their area.

In line with CHEd’s pronouncement, the Department of Health (DOH) frowned upon the school’s decision to suspend classes because of the virus. Health Secretary Emmanuel Duque said it may do more harm than good as suspending classes in such areas would create higher risk for children who could possibly acquire A(H1N1) when they interact with the community. “Bakit ka mag-sususpinde ng klase e ang bata pababalikin sa komunidad, e sa komunidad meron na nga? Tuloy ang pasok. Kung may nararamdamang sintomas, magpahinga,” Duque said in an interview on dzXL radio.

Besides, Duque pointed out, the transmission rate of A(H1N1) in affected area is only 10-20%. However, he encouraged residents in areas where there is a community outbreak to keep at least six feet from each other to prevent transmissions.

After the week-long suspension of classes for universities and colleges nationwide last June 7-11, CHEd Chairman Emmanuel Angeles advised school officials and students not to panic over the said virus and follow necessary precautions instead.

“Ngayon wala naman problema, wala naman kailangang mag-panic,” Angeles said. (Maria Helena Resa Goyal)
